AMA President on the verge of tears over Melbourne aged care home outbreaks – but says PPE not worn and infection control not followed

Australia Medical Association (AMA) President, Dr Tony Bartone, has given an emotional interview over the “astronomical explosion” of COVID-19 cases in Victoria’s aged care homes – with another directive for aged care staff to not be complacent following Tuesday’s warning by GPs.

You can see the full interview here.

“Our residents in aged care facilities are just a heartbeat away from calamity,” he told the Today Show yesterday, looking visibly upset.

However, Dr Bartone warned that aged care homes are dropping the ball.

“The PPE is not being worn. Infection control procedures are not being implemented in some,” he said.

“This is just absolutely unsustainable and we are just going to see the (case) numbers continue to rise.”

As covered above, Victoria recorded its third worst day ever for COVID-19 cases with 403 new infections diagnosed and almost 450 active cases linked to aged care.
