Average Australian Woman Will Live to 90: New Research

At last week’s Ageing Population Summit 2008, Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot released new research that indicates by 2060 Australian women will live to 90, and by mid-century most Australians will on average reach their mid-to-late 80s. She further revealed by 2045 – 50, Australian men and women will live five years longer than they currently do; the life expectancy for women rising from 83.7 to 88 years, that of men jumping from 79 to 84.1. Today, Australia has the second longest life expectancy in the world – 81.4 years – after Japan.
