COVID-19: cases in aged care and home care stay steady – but could family visits see a rise in numbers?

1 min read

The number of confirmed cases among Australia’s aged care residents and home care recipients has remained stable for the second week in a row.

Check out the latest data from the Department of Health above.

As you can see, the number of cases in residential care has grown by just one to 64 this week – and as we reported here, that case of a resident at Villa Maria Aged Care’s Bundoora home in Melbourne is in doubt (the test was inconclusive for coronavirus so the resident must now present two negative tests to be cleared.)

In home care, the number of cases is unchanged at 31 in home care.

In total, there have been 94 cases among aged care residents and home care recipients, of which 29 people have died – a 30% fatality rate.

However, 47 people or 50% have recovered – good news.

The case of an aged care nurse at the Government-run North Rockhampton Nursing Centre who worked while infectious with coronavirus also appears to so far have resulted in no further cases.

But we have also passed the two-week mark since Prime Minister Scott Morrison demanded those operators that had locked down their homes lift those restrictions and allow families to visit.

Operators were granted $205 million in funding to ‘police’ these visits, plus a new Industry Code which was finalised last Monday to provide guidelines, but you must ask: will we now see an uptick in cases from family members bringing in the virus?
