$2M per bed expansion of Bombala Multi-Purpose Service in NSW

A $25 million investment by the Federal Government, on top of $15 million promised by the NSW Government last year, will fund the expansion of aged care services in Bombala, in the Monaro region of NSW, 485km southwest of Sydney, at their local Multi-Purpose Service (MPS) adjacent to the town's hospital.

The project will see the capacity of Bombala MPS increase from 10 to 30 beds, through an expansion of the existing building. Additional staff accommodation will also be part of the project.

Our back-of-envelope calculations put the project cost at approximately $2 million per bed.

"This expansion will include state-of-the-art facilities and additional support services, ensuring residents receive the best possible care," said Kristy McBain MP (pictured right), Member for Eden-Monaro and Federal Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories.

The Federal Government contribution is being delivered through the Aged Care Capital Assistance Program which is aimed at helping fund aged care capital upgrades and expansions in regional, rural and remote communities.

In June this year, the Minister for Aged Care, Anika Wells, announced Round 2 of the Aged Care Capital Assistance Program, with $200 million available to an expanded eligibility criteria, an increase from the $135 million made available in Round 1.

In 2022, Not For Profit provider Southern Cross Care NSW & ACT announced it would close the Currawarna aged care home in Bombala. An active community campaign and $840 million in funding from the NSW State Government led to the premises being reopened as an Assisted Living facility.
