Mike Spencer, 83, was unable to get out of his home when it caught fire at the 200-home over 50s land lease community on Monday, 11 March.

Two homes were destroyed by the fire.

“The fire was that intense a number of surrounding homes have actually been scorched by heat and hit with debris,” Moreton District Crime Group Detective Inspector David Harbison said.

Insp. Harbison said neighbours had tried to get Mr Spencer out of the single-level home.

“They’ve bravely smashed windows and attempted to force open a door,” he said.

“Unfortunately, the intensity of the fire drove them back ... incredibly brave acts attempting to heroically save this elderly resident.”

Resident Roma Brettll, who has lived in Burpengary Pines Village for 14 years, said Mr Spencer was a member of the village’s social club committee.

“He was a lovely man, caring and kind," she said.

“He was a big part of the community. You couldn’t say a thing bad about him.”
