Hobart councils introducing rates for not-for-profit retirement villages

1 min read

Two of Tasmania's 29 councils are planning to introduce rates for not-for-profit retirement villages, with a forecast cost of $20 per week to each village resident.

Hobart and Clarence City councils state that the law requires them to bring not-for-profit villages up to the same rate structure as private villages, a move being vigorously fort by NFPs led by Southern Cross Care chairman Ray Groom.

To our knowledge Tasmania is the only location where rates are not charged, even if it’s to the minority not-for-profit villages.

Obtaining a discount of Council rates is the objective of many villages given they provide their own Street lighting, garbage collection etc. Several Victorian councils have agreed to provide discounted rates.
Retirement village resident associations identify discounting Council rates as a major resident action goal.
