Juniper expands regional aged care footprint with Esperance acquisition

  • Acquisition: Juniper to acquire 104-bed Esperance Aged Care Facility
  • Regional focus: Expands footprint in regional WA markets
  • Sector pressure: Rising costs and funding gaps hit standalone providers
  • Timing risk: Regulatory changes may delay approvals and completion

The WA operator, which specialises in regional aged care, has announced it will acquire community-owned Esperance Aged Care Facility, located 720km southeast of Perth.

With 104 residential aged care beds and 16 independent living units, Esperance Aged Care Facility is one of a handful of stand-alone aged care homes in WA.

Stand-alone aged care operators are facing unprecedented pressures, Juniper CEO Russell Bricknell told The Weekly SOURCE, including heavier regulatory burdens, greater responsibility on directors, and rising costs.

“The bottom line becomes really hard to maintain,” Russell said.

The first six months of 1H FY26 have been particularly difficult for the sector as Government funding has fallen short of rising costs.

“[The] AN-ACC price increase didn’t take into account the full impact of the labor increases from the Fair Work Commission,” Russell said.

Juniper, with one-third of its 23 aged care homes in regional communities, can offer regional expertise and “economy of scale benefits”.

Russell noted the war in the Middle East is adding to costs, intensifying pressures on the sector.

The acquisition is expected to complete within eight weeks, but Russell noted caution on the timeline.

Registrations have shifted from the offices of the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing to the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission under the new Act, meaning new staff and systems.

The acquisition is also subject to regulatory approvals.

Juniper acquired Wollaston Court, a 22-unit over-55s rental community for people with limited means, located in Albany, 418km southwest of Perth, from Amana Living in March this year.
