Labor commits $20M in aged care funding to Western Sydney Muslim and Lebanese Christian groups prior to election

1 min read

The Lebanese Muslim Association has been pledged $10M to build an 80 to 100 bed aged care facility near the Lakemba Mosque, Australia’s largest, to provide for "culturally and linguistically diverse" seniors. And the Maronite Eparchy of Australia have been promised $5M on top of an already pledged $5M to support their Our Lady of Lebanon Aged Care Hostel in Harris Park and funding of a new care facility in Punchbowl to be called Saint Charbel's Care Central.

Labor holds a 9.1% majority in the region but the Liberals have fielded the honorary Bangladeshi consul-general Anthony Khouri plus Clive Palmer’s party has also fielded Muslim candidates. Labor’s local candidates are Immigration Minister Tony Burke, Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare and backbenchers, Julie Owens and John Murphy, none of whom are Muslims.
