Meeting regional demand for over-55s affordable housing: BaptistCare turns sod on $5M 20-unit project in Goulburn

1 min read

Tenants for the Not For Profit’s over-55’s development, to be built by the Integrated Building Group, will be picked from the Family and Community Services (FACs) public housing list in an effort to cut the number of locals waiting for affordable housing.

Retirees aged between 60-69 years old in the Goulburn Mulwaree district jumped from 3,321 in 2011 to 3,738 in 2016. People aged 70-84 rose from 2,748 to 3,192 in the same period according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The local paper reports around 19% of the district’s population currently pays $250-$299 per week for rental properties.

But the average maximum basic rate for the single Age Pension is only $407 per week.

We can see why BaptistCare is already talking about expanding the number of units.
