New York Governor Cuomo’s aides rewrote aged care home report to hide higher COVID death roll

An aide to Governor Andrew Cuomo has apologised after claiming her team had withheld the state’s nursing home death numbers because of “fear” that the real numbers would be used against them.

Secretary to the governor Melissa DeRosa made the stunning admission last week, saying Governor Cuomo’s administration had “rebuffed” a legislative request for an up-to-date death toll.

The number of deaths reported was 6,400 however the true number was twice as high as that, 15,430.

Since the start of the pandemic New York State has recorded 1.7 million COVID-19 cases and 49,287 deaths.
