Victoria recorded 11 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, bringing the number of active cases in the state to 195.

This is the first time the state has recorded less than 200 active cases since 25 June, where there were 183 active cases, and represents a 78% decrease on the 829 active cases reported at the same time in September.

The number of active cases in aged care was also down to 45, or 23% of the state’s total.

The state’s death toll remained steady at 809 with no new deaths recorded, and the 14-day rolling average dropped to 9.4 in metropolitan Melbourne, remaining firm at 0.4 in regional Victoria.

And there were 17 Victorians in hospital, with only one in ICU.

Active aged care outbreaks with the highest active case numbers are as follows:

  • 5 active cases are currently linked to Embracia Moonee Valley Aged Care Facility (total cases: 82)

Premier Daniel Andrews says fitted masks required from Monday

Fronting his 99th consecutive daily press briefing, Premier Daniel Andrews touched on new face mask requirements coming into effect over the weekend.

The grace period for wearing a face shield, bandana or scarf instead of a face mask comes to an end, with those wearing improper face coverings looking at a $200 fine from 11.59pm, Sunday 11 October.

“It is not matter of anyone challenging other people,” he said.

“I think is best not to get into those sorts of debates and there are legal and lawful exemptions. Again, no-one for a moment is suggesting that wearing mask is something that is pleasant or something we would choose to do if you were not for a significant public health benefit.”
