Oakden finally closes its doors – as Senate inquiry hears claims of staff bullying families

The last two patients have been transferred by the SA’s Department of Health – five months after the departing chief psychiatrist Dr Aaron Groves’ report revealed the abuse and overdosing of patients at the government-run facility – before the facility is decommissioned next week, The Advertiser reports.

The news comes as the Senate inquiry into the former mental health facility heard that people who raised concerns about the treatment of residents were “intimidated and bullied” by staff.

The documents reveal the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency told the facility it had breached its responsibilities to ensure residents could make a complaint without fear of reprisal in both 2009 and again earlier this year.

The Senate inquiry will now hold its first public hearing in Adelaide in November. It’s just one of several inquiries into the centre, including an investigation by the Independent Commission Against Corruption.
