Residents of the Jettys by the Lake land lease community at Windang, 108km south of Sydney, are worried they won’t be able to cover the costs of raising their homes.
The order came down from the Wollongong City Council and also presented issues for older residents because the homes would require a larger staircase for entry, the Northern Daily Leader reported.
The construction order was the result of Council’s concerns about flood levels in the area, the village is located on the shores of Lake Illawarra.
David Hoffman, director of Jettys owner Hampshire Village, described the move as ‘overkill’ and said it was based on the notion that rising sea levels would endanger the area by 2050.
While the village has not imposed a requirement for residents to cover costs imposed by Council orders it is assessing the impact on each resident before determining “the best way forward”.
The village is run by Hampshire Villages, along with 17 other sites across the country.
