Referrals now available for Specialist Dementia Care Program (SDCP) – 10 units now across Australia

1 min read

Referrals can now be made via the online form on the Dementia Support Australia website for the SDCP – which is designed to support the 1% of people with dementia that have severe behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia who cannot be cared for in a mainstream aged care home.

Former Aged Care Minister, Ken Wyatt, had announced the funding for the program in February 2019, which aims to build 35 specialist units with nine beds in each Primary Health Network (PHN) across the country.

The first unit at Brightwater Care Group’s The Village in Inglewood, Perth opened last September 2019 with another nine units are opening between January and July 2020.

Interestingly, the SA Government is working in partnership with HammondCare to set up one of the units at the Repat site in Adelaide by 2021 – a ‘replacement’ for the Oakden Older Persons Mental Health Facility shut down in 2017.
