Resident at VMCH’s Bundoora home tests negative twice for COVID-19 but still not cleared – staff in close contact in self-isolation for another week

An indication of how long it can take to clear someone of being infected with coronavirus – and the impact it can have on staffing.

VMCH has released a statement saying that the resident who was admitted to the hospital on the weekend with a temperature of 39 degrees and produced an inconclusive test for COVID-19 is still yet to be cleared four days later.

Two further tests have provided negative results, with the third test due to be returned yesterday.

VMCH says it is taking “no chances” with the case, locking down the home and closely monitoring all 78 residents and staff.

VMCH tells us that all staff and residents were tested on 18 May with all tests coming back negative.

They would not disclose how many staff are in self-isolation, but said only staff that have had direct contact with the resident are at home and they will be free to work again after 27 May – a week away.

“Residents and staff are doing really well,” they said.
