Stockholm reintroduces ban on visits to aged care homes after COVID surge

1 min read

Days after reports of spiking coronavirus cases in Sweden’s aged care homes, its capital is rushing to turn the tide.

Stockholm has reintroduced a ban on visitors and is piloting rapid-result coronavirus testing of staff after 48 of the city’s 313 aged care homes were found to have cases, an increase of more than 20 from last week.

The ban “is a precautionary measure because the residents belong to a risk group,” the city of Stockholm said in a statement.

The country recorded 4,635 new infections on Thursday, up from less than 500 at the start of October.

Over 2,700 deaths have been recorded in Sweden’s aged care homes since the pandemic began, but the Government reopened homes on 1 October after facilities had been cleared of the virus.

The country has reported over 171,000 cases of infections and more than 6,100 deaths in total.
