Sydney aged care home forced into lockdown after staff member tests positive for COVID-19 linked to Thai restaurant cluster

A sign that Melbourne aged care residents and staff are not the only ones at risk.

Ashfield Baptist Homes, 8km from the CBD in Sydney’s inner west, has closed its doors to visitors after an aged care worker tested positive for COVID-19 after dining out at the Thai Rock restaurant in Wetherill Park, which has been linked to 37 cases.

NSW Health says all staff and residents of the home were now being tested for COVID-19 with anyone who had contact with the staff member in self-isolation. The home will remain closed until 31 July pending test results.

In a statement, Ashfield Baptist Homes said: “While the staff member had worked three shifts since the contact, NSW Health advise that at this time they consider the risk to other staff and residents to be very low as the staff member wore masks, gloves and gowns when working with residents and did not work while symptomatic.”

"Nevertheless, ABH is taking all possible precautions and implementing additional safety measures."
