“The tip of the iceberg”: The Australian puts the spotlight on reported aged care assaults

1 min read

Social Affairs reporter Rick Morton has again covered aged care, seizing on the Combined Pensioners and Superannuants Association of NSW (CPSA) submission to the Federal Government’s parliamentary inquiry on aged care which has labelled the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency (AACQA)’s standards “useless”.

The CPSA says figures on reportable aged care  assaults from 2008-09 to 2016-17 show the rate of significant violence has jumped from 0.62% to 1.36% – more than double.

The inquiry, which had a public hearing in Brisbane last Thursday, also received a submission from the Australian Medical Association (AMA) that “confirmed” previous reports by The Australian that hospital emergency departments are being used as a “default step” for aged care residents.
