New Over 55s independent living rental site destined for Gladstone, northwest of Brisbane

A new Over 55s independent living complex in the coastal city of Gladstone, 517km northwest of Brisbane’s CBD, is a step nearer.

A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between Gladstone Regional Council and Gladstone Central Committee on the Ageing to address the ongoing undersupply of affordable independent living rentals and aged care accommodation options for seniors in the region.

The objective of the MOU is to investigate Over 55s independent living and accommodation options at the Philip Street Precinct in West Gladstone. Back in March 2020, the Council sought Expressions of Interest from providers for the community precinct.

Council will provide up to $50,000 for the Gladstone Central Committee on the Ageing to organise a feasibility analysis of the proposal.

“Gladstone Regional Council acknowledges the challenges presented by the ageing of our population, particularly with high numbers of retirees choosing to relocate to other parts of the state,” said Gladstone region Mayor Matt Burnett.

“Our seniors are our volunteers, care givers, community champions, the pioneers, and as a community, we owe it to our seniors to provide affordable and appropriate retirement and aged care options, locally.”
