The University’s Health and Wellbeing Precinct Development is edging closer to reality after it lodged a revised DA with Wollongong City Council for a masterplan concept for Phase 1 of Australia’s first intergenerational university community.
As we reported here, Lendlease was announced as the partner for the precinct’s retirement village which will feature up to 240 apartments in February 2018 – four years ago.
The masterplan – which brings together health research and teaching with health facilities and seniors’ housing on a 3.5-hectare area at the southern end of the University’s Innovation Campus at North Wollongong – also includes:
- A 144-bed aged care facility;
- An 80-100 place childcare centre;
- A Primary Community Heath Centre that will combine community health services with teaching and research activities;
- Community facilities including a wellness centre, café and community hub; and
- Neighbourhood retail to service the Precinct.
Lendlease Retirement Living Managing Director Nathan Cockerill said the independent retirement accommodation would offer residents the benefits of intergenerational living.
“Future residents will have the opportunity to interact with people of all ages who visit the precinct, and also enjoy the benefits of living in a green environment that supports a healthy active lifestyle, close to beaches, recreational reserves and cycleways,” he said.
It will still be another three years however before the site is operational – construction is finally expected to begin this year with the facilities to be open by 2025.
