VIC: Darebin Council commissions $250K aged care advisory panel over concerns about funding: resident petition attracts 1,400 signatures

1 min read

The Council, 15km north of the Melbourne CBD, contracted two independent experts – ageing and disability advocate Dr Rhonda Galbally and Australia and New Zealand School of Government member Peter Allen – to review its aged care services and advise on how to create an age-friendly city ahead of the Federal Government’s plans to stop its block funding of aged care services in mid-2020.

The Council currently contributes about $6 million per year to provide aged care services to around 3,300 clients. But after the changes, clients will be able to choose their provider and the Government will provide funding accordingly.

Around 1,400 residents have signed a petition for Council to commit to providing services beyond 2020, but Council says the funding changes may prevent it from competing effectively in the market.

Another sign that local government-funded services may soon be priced out.
