WA’s voluntary euthanasia bill won’t cover dementia or Alzheimer’s patients

1 min read

As we reported here earlier this month, VIC became the first Australian state in 20 years to introduce laws allowing voluntary assisted dying (VAD) for eligible terminally ill people (under strict criteria) effective as of 19 June.

Since then, WA has outlined that, like the VIC legislation, under its version of VAD euthanasia would be limited to people with “decision-making” capacity, making it unavailable to those with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

The restriction was one of 31 recommendations handed to the State Parliament from an expert advisory panel tasked with providing guidelines for the implementation of VAD across the state.

The WA Government will introduce its legislation to Parliament in August. QLD is also currently considering its own VAD legislation.
