Almost a quarter of Australia’s COVID-19 deaths have been in residential care

1 min read

A sobering statistic.

21 aged care residents have so far passed away after testing positive for the virus – accounting for 23.5% of the 89 deaths across the country.

However, if you take out the 21 deaths that resulted from the Ruby Princess cruise ship – an aberrant cluster of infections – this take the total proportion of deaths in residential to over 30%.

Of course, Australia is still far behind other countries around the world – as we have perversity reported, it is estimated up to 50% of COVID-19 deaths in Europe have been in aged care homes.

In the UK, deaths have now topped over 5,000.

But the numbers support the Aged Care Minister’s comments on the Today Show yesterday – residential care is a vulnerable population – and once residents are infected, doctors can only hope that their medical interventions are enough to turn the tide.
