Apartment re-designed for ageing in place takes out top WA Architecture Award

The redevelopment of the one-bedroom apartment by Perth-based vittinoAshe Architects won the Iwan Iwanoff Award for small project architecture.

Located in East Perth’s Causeway Gardens complex, the architects re-designed the 1950’s 45m2 apartment around a central cupboard unit that provides storage as well as a continuous handrail between the kitchen and dining area and the bedroom.

Awards jury chairman Brian Wright said the design was a clever adaptation that showed what could be done with older housing to provide comfortable accommodation for the elderly.
