Gallipoli Home: Australia’s first Muslim aged care facility opens in Auburn

The $22 million development is adjacent to Australia’s biggest Mosque, the Auburn Gallipoli Mosque.

The Project Director, Abraham Hammoud, told the Parramatta Advertiser it has taken years to shift the community-wide mindset around retirement and care.

“With a lot of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean families they have this idea that we look after our own, that each family should care for their parents or grandparents”.

“But this cultural notion came before people are living into old age and well beyond the limits of a non-training individual has for caring for a person with dementia”.

With a capacity of 102 residents, they already have a two-year waiting list.

The facility features multiple prayer rooms and all beds face Mecca.
