Health Minister and Aged Care Minister urge community to stay vigilant as COVID-19 death toll tops 100 – use the COVIDSafe app

A sign that the Government is wary of a ‘second wave’ of infections as restrictions ease across the country.

Health Minister, Greg Hunt, and Aged Care Minister, Senator Richard Colbeck, have renewed calls for Australians to maintain physical distancing and strict hygiene measures to ensure the country continues to flatten the curve.

In a rare joint statement following the death of a 93-year-old woman at Newmarch House – the 19th death at the Anglicare home – Mr Hunt said the threat of the virus remains and Australians must keep following the advice of National Cabinet and the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC).

“While this is a tragic toll, it also indicates how strict measures adopted across the nation have served to protect our way of life,” he said.

Minister Colbeck also said he was deeply saddened by the latest death at Newmarch House.

“The deaths at Newmarch House underline the dangers COVID-19 pose for vulnerable and senior Australians,” he stated.

“We are not out of the woods. Protecting our most vulnerable is everybody’s responsibility.”

Both Ministers urged the public to stick to the new Industry Code for aged care visits and use the COVIDSafe app.
