Home Care customers shun Level 1 Packages: GEN Aged Care data

1 min read

Australian Government's Australian Institute of Health and Welfare released a range of GEN Aged Care data during the week, highlighting the shift from residential aged care to Home Care, and very low demand for Level 1 Home Care packages.

According to the data, 43% of all Home Care Packages were at Level 2, compared with 35% for Level 3, 16% at Level 4 and only 6.1% were Level 1 packages.

Between 2021-22 and 2022-23, Level 2 Packages increased by 91% with Level 1 decreasing 69%.

The median age for Home Care was 82.

Home Care packages in 2022-23 were up 267% on a decade ago at nearly 121,000 packages in 2022-23 following a 57% surge in home care between 2018-19 and 2019-20.

By contrast, the 2022-23 residential aged care entries were about 5.9% higher than a decade ago in 2013-14.

The data showed that in 2022-23 there were almost 79,000 entries into permanent residential aged care and the median age for residential aged care entry was 86.

About 60% of residential aged care entries in the year were for women.

More than 94,000 Australians were admitted into respite residential care in 2022-23, more than 14,000 into transition care, and more than 8,000 into short-term restorative care.

After accounting for the ageing population, the rate of admissions to permanent residential care for people aged 65 and over decreased from 21 admissions per 1,000 people aged 65 and over in 2013–14 to 17 per 1,000 in 2022–23.
