Social housing project for seniors underway in Perth
- 20 new homes: Seniors apartments under construction in Melville
- Age-friendly design: Built to Silver Liveable standards
- $11.9m investment: Joint Federal and WA Government project
- Affordable living: Helping older Australians stay connected to community
Construction has commenced on a new social housing development for older Australians in Perth’s southern suburbs.
The project will deliver 20 one- and two-bedroom apartments for seniors on low to moderate incomes in Ardross, 15km south of the Perth CBD. The development is located opposite Westfield Booragoon and close to public transport and community services.
Designed to support ageing in place, the apartments will be built to Silver Liveable Housing standards, incorporating features that improve accessibility and adaptability as residents’ needs change over time.
The development forms part of an $11.9 million investment in social housing across Perth’s inner south, funded through a partnership between the Western Australian and Federal governments.
Funding was secured through the Federal Government’s Social Housing Accelerator program, with the State Government using its call-for-submissions model to fast-track delivery in collaboration with the private sector.
Social housing provides subsidised rental accommodation for people on lower incomes, with rents generally linked to a proportion of household income rather than prevailing market rates.
The project was designed by Klopper & Davis Architects and is being delivered by Cottesloe-based builder and developer Spinnaker Developments.
