Investigation launched after Tasmanian aged care resident was vaccinated for COVID without consent

Aspen Medical has stood down a nurse immuniser after allegations a resident at a Meercroft Care aged care home in Devonport, northern Tasmania, was given a COVID-19 vaccine without consent.

The male resident’s wife said she received an apology from Meercroft and Aspen Medical, the Canberra Times reported.

A spokesperson for Aspen Medical confirmed the investigation had been launched after the elderly resident was given the vaccine without permission from his legal guardian.

“It was understood by the aged care facility that consent had been provided and they communicated this to our nurse immuniser,” the spokesperson said.

“We apologise unreservedly to the resident and their family for any hurt and upset this error has caused.”

While the investigation continues the resident is being monitored in case of any adverse reactions to the vaccine.
