Residents take approval of 129-bed Canberra aged care facility to ACAT

The new wave of consumer advocacy: NSW and ACT Not For Profit St Basil’s plan for the $32 million four-storey facility in Kingston was given the green light last month, but residents are taking their case for the building to be re-designed with “significant modifications” to the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

“At 129 beds, the St Basil’s facility would be half the size of one of Canberra's major hospitals, Calvary Hospital at Bruce which has 256 beds, on a tiny fraction of the land space,” the group’s leader Stephen Mills said.

Currently there is a single-storey 20-bed aged care facility on the site, but it has been sitting vacant for about 18 months.

Greens’ Shane Rattenbury, who attended the residents’ meeting along with Labor Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith, says St Basil’s should consult “more closely” with the residents.

“Residents in this area have a number of practical solutions in mind that will help ensure this development is considerate of its neighbours,” he said.

We are sure St Basil’s has considered its neighbours – and local demand plus their need for a facility with more than 20 beds.
