SA Government-run aged care facility sanctioned after resident dies following a fire

1 min read

The 22-bed Ira Parker Nursing Home in SA’s mid-north coast region failed 19 of 44 accreditation outcomes laid out by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission (ACQSC) – including building safety, patient pain management and nutrition.

The audit was conducted following the death of a female resident after a fire broke out in her room in the facility last month. The matter is currently being investigated by the coroner.

The Department of Health has since imposed two sanctions on the facility, including restricting the payment of the Commonwealth aged care subsidy for new residents and revoking its provider status unless evidence of improvement can be shown within six months.

The SA Government also ran Oakden, but SA Health Minister Stephen Wade was quick to clarify the Department’s decision, stressing in an interview on ABC Radio that the facility was “not like Oakden” and the failures were “administrative” rather than care-related.
