Key points
  • SSD approved: SummitCare secures $63M Penrith redevelopment
  • 93 apartments: Existing 98-bed aged care home to be replaced
  • Integrated living: Independent living, aged care and community hub
  • Latest approval: Adds to NSW’s expanding SSD seniors housing pipeline

The aged care operator has secured planning approval to redevelop its Penrith campus into a seniors’ living community.

The NSW Department of Planning approved the State Significant Development Application on 17 July, allowing SummitCare to replace its ageing 98-bed residential aged care home on Jamison Road, 57km from the Sydney CBD, with a mixed retirement living and care development.

The project’s initial Scoping Report, prepared by The Planning Studio, was lodged in March 2024.

The redevelopment will comprise four buildings containing 93 independent living units, five residential aged care rooms and a range of communal facilities.

The independent living component will include:

  • 70 two-bedroom apartments;
  • 16 three-bedroom apartments; and
  • seven one-bedroom apartments.

A small five-room residential aged care component will be integrated into one of the residential buildings, alongside care support facilities including a nurses’ station and utility rooms.

A separate community hub will feature a reception, café, commercial kitchen, private dining room, multipurpose function space, indoor pool, gym, salon, spa rooms, jacuzzi and outdoor terrace. SummitCare said the ground floor of the building would be open for community use.
