SA Opposition promises to ban “completely inappropriate” high-rise aged care developments despite success

1 min read

Adelaide has enjoyed a sudden leap in new aged care and retirement village developments in the past 12 months thanks to a pro-aged development government strategy.

Now the Liberal Opposition Leader Steven Marshall says he will ban developers from exceeding building height limits in suburban areas if his party wins the next state election in March.

He has also pledged to “immediately abolish” the new rules introduced formally in March this year that allow aged care developments valued at over $20M to bypass local councils and go straight to the Planning Minister.

Council development plans include building height limits for streets and suburbs, but these are generally used as guidelines rather than strict requirements.

As a result, more than 10 developments have been approved across Adelaide in the last three years, including a 10-storey development in Parkside and a seven-storey complex on Unley Rd.

Mr Marshall also called out the three vertical village and aged care developments recently proposed by SA aged care provider Life Care, labelling them “excessive” and “completely in appropriate” and asking the State Government to “rule out approving” the plans before the election.
