Spoiling the serenity: Melbourne residents fight proposed $18M four-storey aged care facility – noise and odours

The new wave of consumer advocacy: The group of homeowners in Lysterfeld, 32km southeast of the Melbourne CBD, are lobbying against the 103-bed Japara facility, saying its size will not fit with the area’s neighbourhood character.

Japara plans to knock down a single home to build the facility, which would have four levels including ground level and basement carparking.

Resident Darren St Ledger told the Herald Sun that the facility would pose potential problems, such as excessive noise from its air conditioners and heaters and odours drifting from its kitchen, and there was also concern it would affect property prices.

“We realise with an ageing population there is a need for aged care facilities, but not on this scale and not at this location,” he said.
