Australians to have access to home testing kits soon, Deputy Chief Medical Officer says

1 min read

Australians could soon be able to test themselves for COVID-19, as the first batch of the new “rapid” testing kits arrives in the country to be tested and approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

“It’s very important that we have tests that work and are reliable,” Deputy Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly (pictured) said.

Dr Kelly said Australia’s current testing capacity was “about 10,000 a day” – over 25 times the rate in the United States where 53% of tests are positive compared 1.5% of tests in Australia.

“It convinces me that we’re finding the ones that we need to look for,” he said.
