Operator acquires Perth hospital to convert to aged care
- Hospital acquisition: Brightwater to deliver 39 new aged care beds
- WA demand: State needs 2,700 additional aged care beds
- Transition care: Facility to support hospital discharge pathways
- Opening timeline: Refurbished home due early 2027
WA aged care provider Brightwater Care Group is set to expand its residential care capacity with new aged care beds.
The Not For Profit operator has acquired Attadale Rehabilitation Hospital from Ramsay Health Care and will convert the facility, in Melville, 12km south of the Perth CBD, into a 39-bed aged care home providing permanent residential aged care and transitional care.
The acquisition is Brightwater’s largest to date and comes as Western Australia faces mounting demand for aged care.
A study by consultants EY-Parthenon, published in May, found up to 2,700 new aged care beds will be needed in WA by 2030 to meet future demand, requiring an investment of around $1.8 billion – or up to 27 new aged care facilities within four years.
“Western Australia’s aged care system is under increasing pressure, and we urgently need to bring more high-quality care places online,” said Brightwater CEO Dr Catherine Stoddart.

“This acquisition gives Brightwater an opportunity to respond directly to that challenge by delivering 39 new aged care places in a high-demand metropolitan area.
“Every additional place matters. Increasing aged care capacity not only gives older West Australians and their families more options but also helps ease pressure across the broader hospital and healthcare system.”
The refurbishment is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027.
