Brisbane bowls club now betting on retirement village to save it from closure

1 min read

The Yeronga Bowls Club, 7km south of the Brisbane CBD, had put forward an application in May 2016 to sell one of its greens to the Lennium Group for a 50-unit residential development.

However, Brisbane City Council rejected the plan last month after receiving over 30 community submissions on the project.

Lennium developer Andrew Boyd now intends to build a retirement village on the same site under the Council’s recently amended City Plan 2014, potentially allowing a larger, five-storey development.

It’s the Bowls Club’s last chance to save the club from closing its doors.
Postscript: In discussion with RCC President and RetireAustralia CEO, Alison Quinn, she clarified the Brisbane City Council only supports development on private land. Clubs that have been gifted land don’t comply.
