NSW coroner to investigate COVID-19 deaths at Newmarch House

1 min read

Yet another inquiry into Australia’s worst aged care coronavirus outbreak.

The NSW coroner has announced it will examine the 19 deaths, 17 of which were among COVID positive residents at the Western Sydney aged care home.

A spokesperson for the court said the coroner “has accepted jurisdiction for COVID-19 related deaths of residents of Newmarch House”.

“Police will prepare a brief of evidence for the coroner.”

As we reported here, Anglicare revealed on Sunday that the remaining 18 COVID positive residents had all been cleared of the virus.

But NSW Health has yet to declare the outbreak officially over.

The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commissioner, Janet Anderson PSM, also recently criticised Anglicare’s management at the Senate inquiry into the Federal Government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, saying they were “not as well placed as we needed them to make right, well-informed decisions.”

“We weren’t getting the responsiveness that we expected from an aged care service managing an outbreak.”

We asked Anglicare for a comment on the inquiry, but had not received a response by the time of publication.
