Consumer Affairs Victoria has announced it will fund a dedicated support service for retirement village residents for the next four years.

The service will be run by the Housing for the Aged Action Group (HAAG) and will be available to all residents, not just those deemed to be financially disadvantaged.

A post on the HAAG Facebook page reads: “All kinds [sic] older people are getting ripped off under all sorts of complicated Retirement Housing Contracts. That's why we’ve launched our new Retirement Housing Advice Service.”

The news follows Four Corners and Fairfax’s recent investigation into Aveo that centred on one of its Melbourne retirement villages.

The VIC Govt had handed down 15 recommendations in March following a lengthy 12-month investigation into the village sector that included improving the legal services currently available to retirees.

They also fund the Melbourne-based Consumer Action Law Centre which provides free legal advice to the disadvantaged. Its CEO Gerard Brody has been widely quoted in the media following the Aveo investigation, including this opinion piece here in the Sydney Morning Herald.
