Resident at Council-run aged care home in Melbourne tests positive for COVID-19 after community testing

The sector’s zero number of active coronavirus cases has been short-lived.

A resident at the 53-bed Rosstown Community aged care home in Carnegie, 12km southeast of the Melbourne CBD, has returned a positive test for coronavirus through Victoria’s community testing program.

The home, one of three operated by Glen Eira Council, is now in lockdown as other residents and staff are tested and deep cleaning undertaken.

Glen Eira was one of many providers to close its doors to visitors during the pandemic, saying the precautionary measures was needed “for the continued good health of our community”.

The case is one of 21 new cases identified in Victoria on Wednesday – the greatest number of new cases in the state for over a month.

15 are returned travellers in mandatory hotel quarantine while six (including the aged care resident) are linked to community transmission.

A reminder that the risk posed by the virus is not over.
