One of the architects of Australia’s modern retirement living framework has received the sector’s highest honour.
The Retirement Living Council (RLC) has inducted MinterEllison partner Robin Lyons as an Honorary Life Member, recognising more than three decades of contribution to retirement living policy, legislation and industry development.
The honour was announced at the National Retirement Living Summit in Brisbane, where almost 800 delegates have gathered to discuss the future of retirement living.
Life Membership is the highest honour awarded by the RLC and recognises exceptional and sustained contributions to retirement living.
Shaping the rulebook
Robin has spent more than 30 years advising operators, financiers, regulators and industry bodies on some of the sector’s most significant legal and policy issues.
Widely regarded as one of Australia’s leading retirement living lawyers, he played a key role in developing Queensland’s landmark 1999 retirement villages legislation, which later became a blueprint for reforms in other jurisdictions.
He also led the development of the Australian and New Zealand Retirement Villages Legislation Compendium, a guide to retirement village legislation across Australia and New Zealand.
Robin said he was humbled by the recognition.
“To be recognised by an industry that has been such an important part of my professional life for more than three decades is both humbling and deeply rewarding,” he said.
“Retirement living is a sector built on purpose. It brings together housing, community and wellbeing in a way that has a profound impact on the lives of older Australians.”
Recognition from the sector
RLC President and Aveo CEO Tony Randello said Robin’s influence extended well beyond legal advice.
“Robin has been one of the most influential and trusted voices in retirement living for more than 30 years,” Tony said.
“His expertise, integrity and willingness to share his knowledge have helped shape policy, strengthen consumer protections and support the growth of retirement living communities across Australia.”
RLC Executive Director Daniel Gannon said Robin’s impact could be seen throughout the retirement living landscape.
“For more than three decades, he has been a trusted adviser, a fierce advocate for good policy and an unwavering supporter of a sector that improves the lives of hundreds of thousands of older Australians,” Daniel said.
Robin joins a select group of Honorary Life Members recognised by the RLC, including David Moran, Rosemary Southgate, M-L MacDonald, Peter Nilsson, Jim Hazel, Derek McMillan and Alison Quinn.
