Solomon Islands workers arrive to fill aged care gaps

1 min read

A contingent of aged care workers from the Solomon Islands has arrived in Australia for the first time in years as part of a Federal Government program.

The 12 graduates from the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC), having completed a Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing, Home and Community) at APTC’s Suva campus, journeyed to the Northern Territory under the Federal Government’s Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme.

According to Australia’s High Commission in the Solomon Islands, PALM both provides employment opportunities to Pacific Island nations and fills workforce gaps in rural and regional Australia.

“These workers will not only have the opportunity to earn a secure income, they will be developing skills and gaining valuable experience working in an international setting, and will bring these skills back to Solomon Islands.

“This is an excellent example of Australia’s development partnerships working in tandem to achieve real and positive development outcomes,” the High Commission said.

During the Federal Election, Labor pledged to bring in more doctors and nurses from overseas.
