“This is how government should work”: AMA calls for National Cabinet to become permanent feature – could the aged care sector maintain the same unity?

1 min read

AMA President, Dr Tony Bartone, has called on the regular meetings of the State and Territory Premiers and Chief Ministers with Prime Minister Scott Morrison during the COVID-19 pandemic to become a permanent feature of Australian politics.

“The National Cabinet has largely taken the politics out of politics,” Dr Bartone said.

“We have seen a level of coordination and cooperation in the national interest rarely seen in peacetime in the Federation.”

“The leaders of Coalition and Labor Governments have worked as one to protect the health of the nation.”

“And, despite the enormity and breadth and economic impact of some of the decisions made, the National Cabinet has delivered effective outcomes with a minimum of red tape and bureaucracy.”

The same could be said of the aged care peak bodies and consumer groups.

The new Industry Code has been pushed through in a record 12 days after it was announced by the Prime Minister and the Aged Care Minister – as Envigor’s Nick Loudon argued, an example of what can be achieved when the sector speaks with one voice.

Yet another argument in favour of a single peak body to lead the sector?
