Almost two years after Govt grant, $3.5M Dementia Support Unit opens
An 11-bed Dementia Support Unit built with the support of a $2,870,625 Aged Care Capital Assistance Program (ACCAP) grant has opened.
South Australian regional Not For Profit aged care operator Boandik has officially opened the new, 11-bed Dementia Support Unit, Moore Court, in Mount Gambier, the second most populated city in the state.
Boandik Lodge Inc contributed $700,000.
City of Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin officially opened the new facility, which had been in planning since at least 2020.
The facility has been designed to create a safe, calm, and engaging environment, and features abundant natural light and intuitive wayfinding.
Boandik CEO Pamela Alde said the specialised accommodation would operate with a higher staff ratio than general areas.
“At Moore Court, there will be dedicated staff, plus a Lifestyle Assistant and Dementia Services Advisor, who will play an important role in settling newcomers in and integrating residents for the best possible experience,” she said.
Dr Alde added all staff at Moore Park had been hand-selected.
“All our staff have education in caring for people with dementia, however there are always people who love to work with and have a genuine affinity for people with cognitive challenges and dementia,” she said.
“It’s a real privilege to be working in this area and it requires a special kind of person; patient, calm and above all, someone with empathy and kindness.”
The first resident was due to move in this week.
This project was developed with architects at Brown Falconer with builder Mossop Construction + Interiors.
Boandik operates three aged care homes in Mount Gambier and has Iindependent Living Retirement Units at two sites. It also provides home care services.
