Catholic Healthcare secures approval for Maroubra integrated community

  • Approval secured: Randwick Council backs Maroubra redevelopment plan
  • Integrated offering: Retirement, aged care, wellness in one precinct
  • Project scale: 55 apartments and 44-bed residential aged care home
  • Pipeline growth: Part of $600 million NSW expansion strategy

The Not For Profit faith-based operator's modified development application to build a new connected retirement and aged care community in Maroubra, 10km southeast of Sydney's CBD, is approved.

Catholic Healthcare welcomed Randwick City Council’s approval on 9 April to develop the site of the former Maroubra Sports Club. It will feature across four buildings:

  • 55 retirement living apartments,
  • a 44-bed residential aged care home including four large care suites with lounges,
  • community and wellness services with shared spaces, and
  • rooftop courtyard and café on the street front.
"We are incredibly excited about this project. This is an important step forward for Catholic Healthcare and the Maroubra community," Catholic Healthcare CEO Josh McFarlane said.

"The approval allows us to progress a thoughtfully designed, high-quality coastal development that brings together retirement living, residential care, wellness and community spaces in one connected precinct

"It reflects our commitment to creating environments where older people can thrive and live with dignity, purpose and a strong sense of belonging."

Delivering connected communities

The project, designed by architects GroupGSA, forms part of Catholic Healthcare’s growth strategy to invest more than $600 million over the next five years to develop five new connected communities across NSW.

Developments are already underway in Wahroonga, Blacktown, and Forbes, with another planned for Lewisham, 7km southwest of Sydney's CBD.

"Connected communities are much more than buildings. They are spaces that foster inclusion, wellbeing and connection, and ensure older people feel part of vibrant, supportive communities as their needs change," Josh said.

Catholic Healthcare paid $28.5 million in 2016 for the site, which is one block back from Maroubra Beach, 10km southeast of the Sydney CBD. The organisation then lodged a $76 million proposal and received concept development consent in the NSW Land and Environment Court on 12 July 2019 to develop a co-located facility.

Seven years later, via strategic planning advisors Planning & Co, Catholic Healthcare sought to modify the development approval after demolishing the club.
