“Elder abuse”: The Australian put the spotlight on drug use in aged care homes

1 min read

The News Limited paper has highlighted University of Tasmania research that found nearly two-thirds of aged care residents are given psychiatric drugs every day – often inappropriately prescribed – that are linked to strokes, falls and seizures.

The Royal Australasian College of General Practitioners (RACGP)’s president, Bastian Seidel, is quoted as saying the survey findings are “horrifying”.

“Medical sedation is a foul compromise for inadequate nursing care,” he said.

We can imagine what readers with parents living in aged care made of the report then.
