Government issues Royal Commission appointment into Aged Care and Safety – to run for 18 months

1 min read

After a week’s delay, Governor-General Peter Cosgrove has signed off on the terms of reference and Commissioners for the Government’s inquiry into the sector.

You can read the full terms of reference HERE.

The Commission will be headed up by Honourable Justice Joseph McGrath and Ms Lynelle Briggs AO.

Justice McGrath is a judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia and was previously the WA Director of Public Prosecutions, while Ms Briggs is a former CEO of Medicare Australia and served as the Australian Public Service Commissioner for five years.

These are serious appointments, delivering reassurance the enquiry will be thorough.

And they have time – an interim report is not due until 31 October 2019 – 12 months from now – with the final report to be provided by 30 April 2020.

The Commission will also be based in Adelaide – we assume because the abuses at the government-run Oakden Older Persons Mental Health Facility will be a major backdrop for the inquiry.
