Greek provider slams ABC broadcast as ‘defamatory’

1 min read

The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia has strongly refuted claims made by the taxpayer-funded ABC linking Archbishop Makarios (pictured above), the primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, and St Basil’s Homes for the Aged in Melbourne as “false and damaging allegations” and defamatory.

ABC Radio National’s Background Briefing 'The Archbishop, the luxury pad, and the COVID-ravaged aged care home' was critical of The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission audit of St Basil’s Homes for the Aged and then alleged Archbishop Makarios had received significant sums of money from the aged care home.

The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia responded with a lengthy statement on its Facebook page, which has more than 28,000 followers, far more than those who listen to Radio National’s Background Briefing.

It states the ABC chose to ignore “reliable information provided” and that the ABC did not check the veracity of the information.

“Truly, an apology to the Archbishop, and the faithful of the Holy Archdiocese is called for from the ABC,” said the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia.
