IRT unveils next stage of 1,000-plus seniors’ homes plan
- Major expansion: IRT plans 112 new retirement apartments
- Future growth: Part of 1,000-home development pipeline
- Community focus: New clubhouse and landscaped social spaces
- Demand rising: Campbelltown’s ageing population drives expansion
Wollongong-based IRT has unveiled plans for a major expansion of one of its retirement villages.
A development application has been lodged to transform vacant land owned by IRT in Campbelltown, 53km southwest of Sydney’s CBD, adjacent to its existing Macarthur Place Retirement Village.
The plans outline the construction of two new eight-storey residential buildings containing around 112 independent living units with a mix of curated ground floor units and penthouses.
The application also includes a new clubhouse, landscaped outdoor areas designed to enhance connection, wellbeing and community life, and parking for each new unit, guests and support services.

IRT’s plan is to deliver more than 1,000 new homes for senior residents, including approximately 800 independent living units and 200 residential care beds across Greater Western Sydney, the Illawarra and NSW South Coast over the next decade.
IRT CEO Ross Gallagher said the expansion represents the next stage in the evolution of one of the region’s most established seniors’ living communities.
“At its heart, this proposal is about building on what already makes Macarthur Place special – creating new homes, modern shared spaces and future-focused amenities, so the community can continue to grow and thrive well into the future,” Ross said.
“Importantly, the design has been developed with industry experts to integrate seamlessly with the existing village, with careful consideration given to privacy, overshadowing, and neighbourhood character.”
IRT has been engaging with existing residents of its retirement village since September 2025 through face-to-face meetings and will continue consultation with residents, staff, families and neighbours as the project progresses.
Ross said the proposal reflects both demographic change and IRT’s long-term commitment to the Macarthur region.
“As Macarthur grows, so too does the need for housing that supports older people to live independently, with the right services, amenities and community around them,” he said.
“This expansion will create more purpose-built homes for people who want to downsize, stay connected and age with confidence.”
Population projections show Campbelltown’s retirement-age population is growing rapidly, particularly in the 75 years and over age group.
The Development Application has been lodged with Campbelltown City Council, with plans expected to be placed on public exhibition soon.
If approved, construction would be delivered in stages to minimise disruption to Macarthur Place residents and staff and the surrounding community.
