Living Gems faces backlash from pony club over plans to extend QLD retirement village

1 min read

The land lease operator is reportedly facing a degree of community backlash over plans to expand its Opal Gardens lifestyle community in Logan, 50km south of Brisbane.

As part of the proposal, Logan Village Riding and Pony Club’s horse yards, wash bay and carpark will be excavated and used as fill for a 172-unit retirement complex.

The plans would also see club land, and land from the neighbouring Logan Village RSL, used for stormwater run-off for a lake at the community.

The site currently has 200 homes, and Living Gems is hoping to add 120 three-bedroom homes and 51 two-bedroom units as well as a manager’s residence.

This would include the construction of a pavilion for a scaled-back pony club and toilets at the neighbouring RSL as part of the plans.

The pony club has now put a board up outside the community, asking for public opinion.

“If we lose our carpark and yards, the club will cease to exist, which will affect the community as we have been here for 40 years,” Club president Karen Webb told the Courier Mail.
